2002 has long been heralded as one of the vintages of the last century. A year that saw almost perfect weather conditions producing beautifully ripe and balanced fruit. So when the opportunity came to seize a handful or two of these bottles, that had been on the lease since 2003, we jumped!
It is so rare to capture a wine like this at such a magical moment where it possesses all the brilliant freshness you expect from this epic vintage coupled with 17 years of lees ageing, (where it acquires all those delicious autolytic flavours). These bottles were disgorged for you! No one else! Just a few days ago.
The wine? Delicately creamy upfront. Superb freshness with this engaging energy and lift. The palate is perfectly fresh, with a mineral edge and then waves of lightly roasted nuts on a bed of toast hit you. The finish is perfectly poised capturing your attention and taking you on a long and luxurious journey.
The wine is a blend of 60/30/10 Chardonnay/Pinot Noir/Meunier, vinfied in Oak with filtration. Importantly the wine underwent its second fermentation on cork not cap.
Disgorged 23/11/2020 with each bottle being tasted as they were opened. No dosage.
House Profile
We totally fell in love with this producer when we first visited nearly 10 years ago. Based in Damery, with vines in 57 plots in 7 villages, predominantly Meunier, their wines show a crisp style and age like legends. They acquired the HEV certificate recently and there is a real honesty to their winemaking and wines.
