2002 has long been heralded as a notable Champagne vintage. A year that saw almost perfect weather conditions producing beautifully ripe and balanced fruit. So when the opportunity came to seize a handful or two of these bottles, that had been on the lees since 2003, we jumped!
It is so rare to capture a wine like this at such a magical moment where it possesses all the brilliant freshness you expect from this epic vintage coupled with 17 years of lees ageing, (where it acquires all those delicious autolytic flavours).
The wine? Delicately creamy upfront. Superb freshness with this engaging energy and lift. The palate is perfectly fresh, with a mineral edge and then waves of lightly roasted nuts on a bed of toast hit you. The finish is perfectly poised capturing your attention and taking you on a long and luxurious journey.
The wine is a blend of 60/30/10 Chardonnay/Pinot Noir/Meunier, vinified in Oak with filtration. Importantly the wine underwent its second fermentation on cork not cap.
Disgorged 23/11/2020 with each bottle being tasted as they were opened. No dosage.
House Profile
We totally fell in love with this producer on our first visit. Based in Damery, with vines in 57 plots in 7 villages, predominantly Meunier, their wines show a crisp style and age like legends. They acquired the HEV certificate and there is a real honesty to their winemaking and wines.
